Welcome to the October Issue of the Prologix Newsletter

Value-added services (VAS) offered by Telecom operators are unlike core services. VAS have unique characteristics and relate to other services in a completely different way. They also provide additional benefits that core services can not and at times have the potential to grow into more important components of the service provider’s boutique than core services.

Value Added Services can also be categorised into two different kinds of services. The first kinds are those that can stand alone from an operational perspective. These types of services may or may not be coupled with other services, but they can be. Many non-voice services fall into this category (e.g. Data access capability, phone based payment mechanisms, etc.). These are often provided as an optional service along with voice services, but they could be offered and used by themselves without consumers having to use precious voice minutes to access them. The second, and arguably more numerous (and therefore more important from the point of revenue generation and ARPUs) are those services that do not stand-alone. These services add value to the core service (for e.g. a phone based voice chat service which helps a Telecom operator earn valuable minutes while it’s customers stay ‘on the air’ for longer). While it seems implicit in the definition of value-added, this is an important principle that makes value-added services stand apart from other services.

India is today one of the most vibrant markets for offering new and innovative VAS to consumers. More importantly services that have been tried successfully in other developing markets (e.g. Brazil, China, etc.) have a high possibility of success because of similar demographic profiles of the customer base. India's wireless industry offers some of the world's cheapest call rates and quality value added services engaging millions of people into an under penetrated market where only four in a 100 people own a mobile handset. Indian mobile service carriers have recently taken their user base to over 41.66 million, thereby making India one of the world's fastest growing mobile phone market GSM carriers added approximately 1.414 million customers in September, boosting their user base to 32.02 million. The rival association of carriers using Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology said 251,403 users signed up for their services, raising their customer base to 8.59 million (Figures from industry data).  With a dynamic growth in tele-density and an increasing awareness towards increasing the role of value added services in the Indian telecom environment, voice based services are expected to take off in a big way.

Moreover with the movement of Mobile telephony from the urban markets into rural markets, marketeers are seeing a phenomenon not unlike India’s own progress in which the country seemed to leapfrog straight from the Industrial revolution to the Information age. As more efficient consumer oriented services emerge, one sees even new users of mobile handsets demanding and adapting to these with ease.

This Issue of our newsletter focuses on speech enabled Value Added Services and includes details on two recently launched services – one in India and the other internationally that are indicators of the days ahead…

In the same vein, it is also my pleasant duty to wish you a very auspicious festival season on the occasion of Dussehra and Dipawali – two festivals which celebrate the victory of good over evil in Indian mythology and have countless legends woven around them…

Happy Reading…

IRCTC Launched India's First Passenger Ticket Reservation Service

Date: 9 September 2004

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) recently launched India's first passenger ticket reservation service over the telephone in collaboration with India's leading GSM providers. The service is entirely voice-based and is expected to allow passengers on the move to conveniently book their train tickets over the phone using an easy to browse, speech enabled interface designed by Bangalore, India based company OnMobile Asia Pacific.

The service is currently available in Delhi and Mumbai in India on Hutch and Orange networks and is slated to be replicated all over the country shortly. Amongst the many innovations deployed by OnMobile in this application are OnMobile's Hindi speech recognition model, and Milli - a high quality TTS voice from Prologix (on the Vaachak platform) designed to accurately read out Indian names written in the Roman script. Milli helps fulfil an important component of this service through which all callers can get accurate, automated confirmation on the names of passengers entered by them in the ticket details.

Hutch and Orange users in Mumbai can access this service by dialling ‘123’ from their mobile handsets.

Software to Convert Text Messages to Speech on Phone

Using a cellphone can be a challenge for the blind and those with limited vision. Even making a call can be difficult, and using features that are available only by menu-driven choices on the screen can be next to impossible. Cingular Wireless aims to help people with vision problems with a new option that reads aloud the contents of a cellphone screen.  The feature, called Talks by Cingular Wireless and based on text-to-speech software, works with almost all of the phone's functions. Users can navigate menus by listening to choices; they can also listen to text messages, e-mail and caller ID information. The software provides audible alerts about battery life and signal strength. Talks, which is offered as an option for the Nokia 6620 phone, comes on a card that is inserted into the cellphone, beneath the battery. It costs $199, but Cingular offers introductory rebates for the blind of $199 with a two-year contract and $100 for one year. The phone costs $399; a $100 rebate from Nokia is available with a two-year contract.

“The most important thing that the Cingular phone does is it actually makes every single thing on the phone menu accessible to someone who is blind or has low vision,” said Kelly M Parisi, Communication Vice President of the American Foundation for the Blind.
