THIS
MONTH’S FOCUS VALUE ADDED SERVICES |
|
||||
|
Prologix Software Solutions Pvt. Ltd. is a Prologix has created innovative IVR and Speech solutions for enterprises which leverage it’s expertise in VoiceXML, Speech technologies and Voice interface design such as Directory Assistance, Auto Attendants, and IP based PBX solutions. |
Welcome to the October Issue of the Prologix Newsletter Value-added services (VAS) offered by Telecom
operators are unlike core services. VAS have unique characteristics
and relate to other services in a completely different way. They also provide
additional benefits that core services can not and at times have the
potential to grow into more important components of the service provider’s
boutique than core services. Value Added Services can also be categorised
into two different kinds of services. The first kinds are those that can
stand alone from an operational perspective. These types of services may or
may not be coupled with other services, but they can be. Many non-voice
services fall into this category (e.g. Data access capability, phone based
payment mechanisms, etc.). These are often provided as an optional service
along with voice services, but they could be offered and used by themselves
without consumers having to use precious voice minutes to access them. The
second, and arguably more numerous (and therefore more important from the
point of revenue generation and ARPUs) are those services that do not
stand-alone. These services add value to the core service (for e.g. a phone
based voice chat service which helps a Telecom operator earn valuable minutes
while it’s customers stay ‘on the air’ for longer). While it seems implicit
in the definition of value-added, this is an important principle that makes
value-added services stand apart from other services. |

Software to Convert
Text Messages to Speech on Phone
By
THOMAS J. FITZGERALD, The New York Times Using a cellphone
can be a challenge for the blind and those with limited vision. Even making a
call can be difficult, and using features that are available only by menu-driven
choices on the screen can be next to impossible. Cingular Wireless aims to help people
with vision problems with a new option that reads aloud the contents of a
cellphone screen. The feature, called
Talks by Cingular Wireless and based on text-to-speech software, works with
almost all of the phone's functions. Users can navigate menus by listening to
choices; they can also listen to text messages, e-mail and caller ID
information. The software provides audible alerts about battery life and
signal strength. Talks, which is offered as an option for the Nokia 6620
phone, comes on a card that is inserted into the cellphone, beneath the
battery. It costs $199, but Cingular offers introductory rebates for the blind
of $199 with a two-year contract and $100 for one year. The phone costs $399;
a $100 rebate from Nokia is available with a two-year contract. “The most
important thing that the Cingular phone does is it actually makes every
single thing on the phone menu accessible to someone who is blind or has low
vision,” said Kelly M Parisi, Communication Vice President of the American
Foundation for the Blind. |
