OCTOBER 2003 |

Dipawali Greetings from Prologix
It’s
festival time in India once again. The bulls are on a rampage in the markets,
the Indian economy seems poised to emerge stronger and more vibrant than ever
before, and economists are hopeful of the pace continuing for at least some
time. This is also the season of good cheer with ‘Dipawali’ – India’s festival
of lights lightening up the sky with its joy and gaiety.
While
India Inc. celebrates, and the country reaffirms its commitment to attaining
‘Developed’ status by 2020, Indians are also starting to use their technical
acumen to jumpstart social development. While technologists have long promised
‘exponential gains in social development’ through the use of modern technology,
it is now for the first time that one sees real efforts resulting in real
successes.
On
a separate track, India’s telecommunication revolution continues. Our tariffs
continue to be amongst the lowest in the world and carriers are adding more and
more subscribers with every passing month. The Indian Telecom Regulator has
recently announced plans of migrating to a ‘Unified’ license regime and sorting
out the controversy between full and limited mobility service providers. Under
penetrated rural markets seem to be the emerging flavour for all operators,
which may also spur the deployment of Indian language speech solutions in
carrier networks.
In
this issue we try and focus on stories which highlight how communications
technology is increasingly being used to allow all sections of society to
derive benefits from it. In a separate story we also give our readers a sneak
preview of Prologix’s innovative TelePro IP-PBX solution which will help
enterprises drastically cut down their voice communication expenses and achieve
higher operational efficiencies.
All
of this means that consumers can look forward to greater cheer in the months
ahead. Indeed, to communicate with loved ones far and wide, to spread happiness
through wishes, emotions and greetings – this is the very spirit behind
Dipawali.
I
join the Newsletter group and the Prologix team in wishing all of you a very
joyous Dipawali and a successful and prosperous year ahead.

Wireless
Connectivity for Rural Communities
Wireless
communication - an era old technology, from Marconi’s crude experiments to
today’s 802.11b wireless LAN, has never been as powerful as today. Along
with it’s fair share of hype and criticism, Wi-fi is now increasingly being
chosen as the communication medium of choice not just in enterprises but also
much larger, unstructured deployments.

The Van Gujjars (a nomadic community in An initiative known as Daknet, led by a team of MIT graduates, is
today making efforts to enhance this network to connect these villagers to
the mainstream. A pilot demonstration recently took place in Tikawali, a
village near Faridabad (State of Haryana, India). The pilot solution enabled
villagers to file complaints via email and send video messages from one
village to another. The solution combines Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b) equipment at
2.4Ghz with Mobile Access Points (MAPs) mounted on and powered by a public
bus. The pilot proved that it was able to wirelessly and automatically collect,
transport and deliver data at high speeds to and from kiosk-based computers
enabled with Wi-Fi cards. High Speed Wireless data networks are today revolutionizing the landscape around us. Availability of cheap and cost effective bandwidth apart from easing data access allows users to benefit from revolutionary new technologies such as Voice over IP and Voice enabled services. Increasingly popular Wi-Fi networks along with indigenous developments in domains such as SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and Natural Language Processing (Speech Recognition and Text to Speech synthesis for Indian languages) hold great promise for accelerating the rate of social development in India. |

Empowering people with disabilities
Technological
progress also brings with it the high costs related to obsolescence of older
technology. Most often it is our environment which gets the worst deal with the
generation of harmful wastes created by obsolete technology. In this scenario,
solutions which aim to reduce electro-magnetic wastes along with improving the
quality of life of disadvantaged people are more than welcome. The Mobile Phone
Reuse Project is one such project which has successfully achieved both these
objectives. Spearheaded by IDA, MobileOne and The Singapore Association
for the deaf [SADeaf], The Mobile Phone Reuse project focuses on popularizing
the use of SMS (Short Message Service) along with vibrating alerts to help
people with hearing disabilities to communicate better.
|
The
project has already generated more than 1,000 mobile phones pledged by the public
and corporate organizations for the purpose of re-distribution to the needy. As a
result of the effort and contributions put into this project, all 416 hearing
impaired members of SADeaf who applied for phones received free old phones.
These phones were serviced and re-packaged with 500 free SMS messages per
phone per month (for a period of 6 months) as well as complimentary SIM cards
sponsored by MobileOne. Volunteers also conducted training sessions to teach
the hearing impaired persons how to fully utilize the phones efficiently. By
initiating reuse of old mobile phones, Singaporeans are provided with an
environmentally safe alternative for disposal of spare mobile phones sitting
idly in shelves and drawers, also minimizing potentially hazardous electronic
waste, reducing the adverse impact on the environment. |

TelePro IP-PBX expected on the shelves in Mid November 2003
Any new technology is useful only if it is able to provide real benefits to users along with faster and higher returns on the investment made on it (ROI). This has always been the core technology development philosophy at Prologix and the TelePro IP-PBX is just another manifestation of this belief. Built on Prologix’s TelePro voice platform the TelePro IP-PBX is an integrated IP based communication solution for enterprise wide networks. Despite the ubiquitous data network present in every nook and corner of today’s enterprise and Voice over IP technology having matured to it’s present level, one still several enterprises using separate voice and data networks (in the form of EPBX and LANs) within their networks.
The TelePro IP-PBX aims to bridge this divide and use the liberal bandwidth available within an enterprise (10 and 100 Mbps LANs) to transport voice as well, thereby making the traditional, proprietary PBX solution redundant. This next generation robust & flexible telephony solution integrates itself with existing PSTN lines, providing generic PBX facilities alongwith high end features such as Voice Mail and Conferencing – all over the data network. Enterprises can choose to replace traditional telephony handsets with Soft phones (which would be installed on PCs), or alternatively use IP phones which plug into the data network. All of which translates into significant savings in equipment, wiring and handset costs along with the availability of a future ready communications solution.
“TelePro has been conceived and designed keeping Small and Medium Enterprises in mind. Its architecture & easy administration makes it easy to implement, while allowing atomic expandability – i.e. it is as easy to grow the network by 100 extensions as it is by 1.” said Vibhu Agarwal, President, Prologix Software Solutions Pvt. Ltd.
Pradeep Gaur, VP Engineering, added “The core of the IP-PBX solution is our innovative voice interface platform, TelePro™ which is based on Open Standards. The inherited cluster based architecture of TelePro makes IP-PBX an easy-to-use, fast, and flexible solution.”
TelePro IP-PBX works on open standards, next generation SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) assuring future upgradeability, complete vendor independence and compatibility with other standard SIP devices. Other thoughtful features include the options to club analog phones with the VoIP network, making migration to the Voice over IP setup simple and convenient.
TelePro IP-PBX ver 1.0 is in the process of finalization and will be released by mid November 2003. If you would like to get more information on how TelePro IP-PBX can help your organization save on communication costs, do get in touch with Vinamra Agarwal, vinamra@prologixsoft.com
